What is Dry mix mortar
Dry mix mortar is among the most versatile materials used in the modern construction industry. It serves to lay bricks & other masonry blocks, coat buildings as renders & skim coat & fix tiles. It is made of cement, sand, mineral, and functional additives, mixing together proportionally.
The Advantages of Dry Mix Mortar
1. The quality of dry mix mortar is better than that of field-mixed mortar.
Dry mix mortar can significantly reduce engineering maintenance costs. If the quality of the mortar mixed on the construction site does not meet the requirements, it is easy to be reworked or repaired in a short period of time, which will cost more. It is predicted that after 50 years of use, the total cost of the initial construction and maintenance of the plastering project constructed with dry mix mortar is only 1/20 of that of traditional plastering mortar.
2. Dry mix mortar production enterprises can design formulas.
According to different matrix materials and functional requirements, such as aerated concrete blocks with high water absorption, High water retention masonry and plastering mortar; self-leveling platform mortar for ground requiring high flatness etc. It can also meet various functional requirements, such as thermal insulation, impermeability, grouting, repair, decoration, etc. According to incomplete statistics, there are more than 50 types of dry mortar.
3. Dry mix mortar is made by adding water on site and stirring, so it can be used according to the construction progress and use.
Dry mix mortar is not limited by time and is easy to use. Mortar transportation is more convenient and can be transported in a centralized manner, which is less restricted by traffic conditions. Dry mix mortar has a long shelf life. The storage period of bagged ordinary dry mix mortar is 3 months, and the storage period of bagged special dry mix mortar is 6 months.
Cellulose ether in Dry mix mortar
As the main admixture in construction dry mix mortar products, cellulose ether plays a key function in the characteristics and cost of dry mix mortar. There are two types of cellulose ether: one is ionic, such as sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and the other is non-ionic, such as Hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) and Hydroxyethyl methyl cellulose (HEMC), etc.
The most critical property of cellulose ether is their water retention in building materials. Without the addition of cellulose ether, the thin layer of fresh mortar will dry out quickly, preventing the cement from hydrating in the normal way, preventing the mortar from hardening and obtaining good cohesion.
At the same time, the addition of cellulose ether promotes the excellent plasticity and flexibility of the mortar and improves the bonding strength of the mortar.
